Lone Star Court is one of the most fun, retro-cool hotels in Austin. With a vintage mid-century motor court vibe — updated with a modern design aesthetic and Texas touch — this boutique hotel provides a slice of nostalgic Americana along with a community feel.
Location
The hotel is in The Domain, Austin’s premier multi-use development that contains more than 100 upscale shops, restaurants, nightspots and a cinema. A free shuttle can whisk guests around The Domain, and a map is provided upon check-in. The location is midway between downtown and the business/tech corridor of North Austin. It’s a hip, happening part of the city.
The style of Lone Star Court is pure fun, relaxed and Texas friendly. The layout is like a 1950s motel, with the two and three-story buildings situated around a central courtyard with native landscaping. This large common area includes a covered pavilion where live music and other events often take place, fire pits, pool, lawns and other seating areas. A variety of artists playing genres from country to bluegrass to rock play here. The updated mid-century atmosphere is felt throughout the hotel.
Service is laid-back and friendly, and the staff is a tight-knit group that feels like a family. The Valencia VIP program (free to join) provides added benefits such as express check-in, upgrades and one complimentary night after eight paid nights.
The outdoor pool is a small dipping pool, meant to be reminiscent of swimming holes. Room porches furnished with colourful wooden rocking chairs face outward toward the lawn and courtyards. There is a fitness centre, complimentary self-parking (including electric car charging stations) and free Wi-Fi. Bicycles are available for free.
There are facilities for group meetings and events in a 2,000 square-foot event space, as well as the outdoor covered pavilion and open-air lawn. These bookings include group room discounts, welcome receptions and other benefits.
Rooms
The very spacious rooms are a delight. From the colourful sofa and knotted pine armoire, to the Texas Hill Country touches such as deer horn lamps and photographs of country singing sensations, the décor is inspired by a ‘Lone Star state of mind.’
The custom Valencia beds with metal headboards are made up with luxurious Egyptian linens. Braided rugs, Fifties-style light fixtures and cow-hide director chairs all offer comfort and style. A retro-cool Smeg refrigerator is stocked full of goodies for purchase, while snacks are in vintage bottle crates (there’s even a hangover cure in case you imbibe too much in the minibar or local nightlife).
A sliding barn door divides the room from bathroom, where the retro look continues with vintage patterned floor tiles, granite free-standing sink counters and blue mason jar drinking glasses. A walk-in shower and California apothecary LATHER® bath products round out the bathroom. There are 123 total guest rooms including 80 kings, 40 doubles and three suites.
Dining
The barn-like Water Trough restaurant and bar has a smallish menu featuring casual Texas-style dishes such as tacos, brisket burgers and chilli. There is a signature cocktail menu along with wine and beer selections; the signature drink is The Chill Cowboy, made with vodka-infused nectar sun tea, hibiscus liqueur, peach purée, lemon juice, and honey syrup. A large stone fireplace is a centrepiece and makes for a cosy atmosphere in cooler weather.
The Deets
Double rooms start at $149. Pets are accepted (limit of two, up to 50 lbs each); guests must sign a pet waiver and pay a non-refundable fee of $50 per pet. Pets can enjoy a welcome amenity, while guests with pets receive a $10 mini-bar credit and late check-out of 2 pm when booking the Pet Package.
Lone Star Court is family-friendly for all ages, and the grounds and atmosphere make it a good place for children. Kids will also love some of the available options such as the S’mores packages (which can be made over the firepits) for a camp-out adventure, or Friday Night Flix, a free monthly movie for all ages.
